Ephesians 2:4-5 reveals God’s great love for each of us:

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ, even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!

Let’s look at the context of this verse so we can discover the depths of God’s great love.

Ephesians 2:1-3 says,

As for you, you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience. We all lived among them at one time in the cravings of our flesh, indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.”

These verses show us we were dead in our sins.

Sin brings death.

Sin brings disconnection from God.

We were under wrath for our sins...disconnection from God...judgment...condemnation...death.

Yet God, because of his great love for us, did something about this wrath.

He made us alive with Christ!

Jesus took upon himself the wrath for our sins.

He took our disconnection from God...our sin...our judgment...our condemnation...our death.

Then, in the resurrection, we were made alive with Jesus.

The resurrected Jesus now lives in us by his Spirit.

Jesus took upon himself what caused our death...sin.

He then defeated death through the resurrection and he now lives in us.

Through Jesus, God saved us from sin...from wrath...from death...judgment...and condemnation, and he then

made us alive with Jesus.

This act of God in saving us is called grace...the kindness of God to us through Jesus.

It was all motivated by God’s great love for us!

Let’s read Ephesians 2:4-5 again,

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ, even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!
