Jesus Fulfilled Jeremiah’s Prophecy Of The New Testament And Full Forgiveness

While celebrating Passover with his disciples, Jesus said that he was about to fulfill the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:31-34, the prophecy of the new testament.

Matthew 26:26-28
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sin. (Webster’s Bible Translation)

Most believers view the new testament as twenty-seven books in the Bible (Matthew-Revelation).

However, the new testament is not about twenty-seven books but one Savior’s blood – the blood of Jesus shed for the forgiveness of sins.

According to Jesus, the new testament is not about books but blood – his blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins...our sins.

Jeremiah prophesied about the new testament, saying it would be different than the old testament of law.

Most believers view the old testament as thirty-nine books of the Bible (Genesis-Malachi).

However, the old testament of law was about the shedding of the blood of millions of sacrificed animals over the course of 1500 years for ongoing forgiveness of sins.

Yet with the one sacrifice of himself for all people and all sins, Jesus shed his blood for the eternal forgiveness of sins.

Jesus’ sacrifice fulfilled Jeremiah’s prophecy.

Sadly, however, Jeremiah’s prophecy fulfilled by Jesus is not fulfilled in the lives of most believers.

Rather than embracing by faith the forgiveness of sins made possible by the shed blood of Jesus, most believers are taught to continue to ask God for forgiveness.

Though they live in the reality of the new testament of grace, they have the mentality of the old testament of law.

To them, forgiveness is ongoing...much like the old testament of law, though they live under the new testament of grace where forgiveness is full and eternal.

Under the new testament of grace, we do not request God’s forgiveness on an ongoing basis.

Instead, we possess God’s forgiveness through faith in Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:18-21; Ephesians 1:6-8; Colossians 1:13-14; Hebrews 8:1-13; 9:12; 10:17-18; 1 John 2:12; Revelation 1:5; Acts 10:43; 13:38-39; 26:16-18).

The reason believers possess God’s forgiveness is because Jesus poured out his blood for the forgiveness of sins in fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:31-34.

To Jesus, whose blood established the new testament of grace, forgiveness is fulfilled, full, final, and forever.

Sadly, most believers in Jesus have never experienced the fulfillment of forgiveness.

I used to be one of them, continually asking God to forgive me - not for salvation, but for fellowship with God.

I was taught unconfessed and unforgiven sins block fellowship with God.

The Bible doesn't teach that fellowship with God can be blocked under the new testament of grace.

Rather, it teaches we have been brought close to God through the blood of Jesus (Ephesians 1-3; Hebrews 7-10).

I was taught there are two types of forgiveness - Positional and Relational.

If this is true, then Jesus did not fulfill Jeremiah's prophecy of forgiveness.

However, the blood of Jesus secured eternal forgiveness so we can know God relationally.

Jeremiah's prophecy was not about a future positional forgiveness under the new testament, but it was about a future eternal forgiveness so we can know God personally.

The Bible does not teach there are two types of forgiveness - Positional and Relational.

Under the new testament of grace, there is only one forgiveness - eternal forgiveness through the shed blood of Jesus...the blood of Jesus that was poured out to establish the new testament of grace and to secure eternal forgiveness so we can know God relationally.

This is the forgiveness Jesus secured when he fulfilled Jeremiah’s prophecy contained in Jeremiah 31:31-34.
