Impossible To Be Brought Back To Repentance In Context

Hebrews 6:4-6

In AD 65, the writer of Hebrews writes to warn the Jewish reader who has rejected Jesus and the new testament of grace established in his blood.

Rather than believing that was Jesus the Christ of the Jewish Scriptures and that he established the new testament of grace in his blood, many Jewish people were rejecting him and the new testament of grace.

They rejected Jesus as the Christ.

The continued in the old testament law of Moses.

By doing this, they were depending upon the law (sacrificing of animals) for forgiveness of sins and cleansing from sins, thus trampling underfoot the blood of Jesus, crucifying him all over again (the Jewish nation called for the crucifixion of Jesus – see John 19), and subjecting him to public disgrace with each animal sacrificed.

This act of depending upon the law for forgiveness of sins and cleansing from sins was called repentance in Judaism.

The writer told the Jewish people, who were enlightened about Jesus but rejected Jesus, that it is impossible to be brought back to repentance (forgiveness of sins and cleansing from sins) under the law.

The old testament of law system with the earthly high priests had ended, and the new testament of grace had begun; therefore, it was impossible to be brought back to repentance under the law.

Forgiveness for sins and cleansing from sins was only through the blood of Jesus, which God was offering freely and fully to all people.

His offering of forgiveness of sins and cleansing from sin is received through faith in Jesus.

Once a person receives through faith God’s forgiveness and cleansing, they are experience eternal full forgiveness for all sins and completely cleansing from all sins.

The writer warns his Jewish readers in AD 65 who reject Jesus as the Christ and this offer of grace, and continue to seek forgiveness for sins and cleansing from sins through the law of Moses, that judgment is coming.

He explains to them that it is impossible to be brought back to repentance, which means to experience forgiveness of sins and cleansing from sins through the law.

Why is it impossible to be brought back to repentance through the law?

It is impossible because the law no longer exists.

It is impossible because the law was abolished in the death of Jesus.

Because the law was abolished through the death of Jesus and no longer exists, it is impossible to experience forgiveness and cleansing from sins through the law.

Forgiveness and cleansing is only through Jesus and his blood.

Through faith in Jesus, a person receives forgiveness and is cleansed from all sins (Acts 26:18; 13:38-39).
