Think About It #2: Do We Obtain Forgiveness On A Sin By Sin Basis?

Think about it.

If we had to obtain forgiveness from God for each individual sin, then Jesus would have to come back and die again for that sin and all the other sins...for every person...for every sin...for all time.

About this, Hebrews 9:24-28 says:

"For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many..."

If we had to obtain ongoing forgiveness from God for the forgiveness of our sins, then "Christ would have to suffer many times since the creation of the world."

The writer of Hebrews is explaining that if God required forgiveness for each individual sin, then Jesus would have to die for each person's individual sin since the creation of the world.

That would be tremendous suffering.

But...

Jesus offered himself for all sins for all people for all time, dating back to the beginning of time to the end of time.

He was sacrificed once for all sins, for all people, for all time.

The point of emphasis by the writer of Hebrews is that God is not forgiving sins on a sin by sin basis.

Jesus obtained eternal forgiveness for sins (Hebrews 9:12).

Faith in Jesus receives this one time for all time forgiveness of sins.

If you have come to faith in Jesus, you have received complete eternal forgiveness.

No more asking for forgiveness on a sin by sin basis.

You have accepted God's forgiveness through faith in Jesus.

You are forgiven forever.

Think about it.
