Why Did God Remove The Law?
God’s ultimate purpose in removing the law and replacing it with grace was so we could know him as our loving Father. Knowing God as our Father was made possible because God sent the Spirit of Jesus to live in us when he removed the law.
Galatians 4:4-6 says:
"But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, 'Abba, Father.’"
These verses teach that the reason God redeemed people from the law was so they could become his loved children and so his Spirit could live inside their hearts, enabling them to call God “Abba, Father.
Galatians 4:4 tells us Jesus was born of a woman, under law, to redeem, or set people free from the law. He redeemed people from the law so they could be God’s children and so he could be their Father. Upon becoming a loved child of God, he would send the Spirit of his Son, Jesus, to live in the hearts of his children.
For God to send the Spirit of Jesus to live in us, he had to totally cleanse us. This is because the Spirit of Jesus cannot live in an unclean heart. He totally cleansed us through the cross by his blood. 1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”
To walk in the light means we have come into a relationship with God by acknowledging our sin and accepting God’s grace by placing our faith in Jesus. The moment we accept God’s abundant provision of grace through trusting in Jesus, we experience the truth of our sins being cleansed for all time.
Cleansing us from all sin for all time is part of what the new covenant of grace is all about. Hebrews 1:3 says, “After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” When Jesus shed his blood for everyone, he provided purification for all sin, for all people, for all time. It is by faith that we receive this purification.
Purification is the act of God where he forgives us of all sins, past, present, and future, and declares us to be holy in his sight through the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:10, 17-18). The purpose of God in purifying us from all sin, for all time is so he could make our hearts his eternal home. The law showed us our sin. Grace, through the blood of Jesus, cleansed us from sin, and now the Spirit of Jesus comes to live in our hearts forever.
