Jesus Solves Life’s Two Greatest Problems

Life has many problems.

Yet the two greatest problems of life are:

Problem #1: The End of life – death

Problem #2: The Emptiness of life – despair

Solomon, the writer of Hebrews, writes about these two problems in his book, Ecclesiastes.

He was given an assignment from God to search for the meaning of life.

God gave Solomon the wealth he needed to explore the meaning of life and the wisdom he needed to evaluate what he explored.

Solomon searched for meaning in people, pursuits, projects, and pleasure.

Yet he found no meaning…no purpose.

Solomon opened his book, Ecclesiastes, with the conclusion to his God-given assignment to search for the meaning of life.

His conclusion…

Meaningless, meaningless, utterly meaningless. Everything is meaningless.

After stating his conclusion, Solomon reflects on his experiences and records the observations of his search that led to his conclusion of meaningless.

The phrase he used often to describe the meaninglessness of life is “a chasing after the wind.”

The reason for this description is that no matter what people do on earth – they die.

Through his research, Solomon realized that no one could escape death (Ecclesiastes 2:16; 3:19; 6:12; 7:2; 8:8; 9:3-5, 10); and because all die, life truly has no purpose.

In the book of Romans, Paul writes about how death entered humanity through Adam (Romans 5:1-21).

Through Adam, sin entered humanity, resulting in death.

And death is life’s biggest problem, because all die.

To solve life’s biggest problem, Jesus came to defeat death and bring us life…eternal life (Romans 5:12-21; John 1:1-15; 10:10; Hebrews 2:14-15).

Jesus took upon himself at the cross the sin of all humanity…he died our death (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Then he rose from the dead…solving life’s greatest problem by defeating death.

In 1 Peter 1:3-4, Peter writes that because of the resurrection, we have hope.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you…

Hope is something to live for in the present (a living hope) and something to look forward to in the future (an eternal inheritance that can never go away - perish, go bad - spoil, or grow old – fade).

Because of faith in Jesus, we live everyday with hope in our hearts, meaning in our hearts, purpose in our hearts…Jesus in our hearts (Colossians 1:27).

Because of faith in Jesus, we have been reconciled to God (Romans 5:11; 2 Corinthians 5:18-21), meaning we have a close relationship with God who is the Creator of life and who gives our life meaning.

Jesus solves life’s two greatest problems…the end of life, death, and the emptiness of life, despair.

Because of the resurrection of Jesus, we will never die (John 5:24; 11:25; Ephesians 2:4; Colossians 2:13-14).

Because we have been reconciled to God through Jesus, we can live without despair…our lives have meaning now and meaning in the future; we have something to live for in the present and something to look forward to in the future.

Solomon opened Ecclesiastes with the words, “Meaningless, meaningless, utterly meaningless. Everything is meaningless.”

However, Jesus spoke these words, “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.”

Jesus came to bring you life, a life with meaning and purpose, both in the present and the future.

No matter who you are or what you have done, you can have life starting right now by placing your faith in Jesus.

If you have never placed your faith in Jesus, would you do that now. Below is a brief prayer to guide you in placing your faith in Jesus.

Jesus, I believe you took my sins upon yourself at the cross. I believe you died my death. I also believe you rose from the dead, and in doing so, defeated death. Today, I place my faith in you. Through you Jesus, I am now in a relationship with God. My life on this earth now has meaning. I have eternal life now and an eternal inheritance which is mine through faith you.
